Live The Boy Scout Values
Boy Scout values are more than talk
On Monday night President Trump gave a speech at the Boy Scout Jamboree in West Virginia. There were about 40,000, 11 to 18 year old Boy Scouts, leaders and other supporters present….the Washington Post provides the details. The Boy Scout values supersede any talk.
The Boy Scouts played a big role in me becoming and continually developing as a leader. My son has been a Scout since 7 years old and even today as he works toward Eagle Scout I help the Scouts with leadership development programs, merit badge counseling, and as a former wildlife biologist I assist with outings and career development in wildlife and outdoor pursuits.
I know that similar to all organizations the Boy Scouts aren’t perfect but being a work in progress redeems them. They actively cultivate and work toward the Boy Scout Law on a daily basis and over time that small daily investment adds up to create tremendous impact…. Boy Scouts become leaders!
The Scout Law says a Scout is:
This is good checklist to hold yourself to for a long fulfilling and consistent life of leadership. How would you feel about your child, spouse, sibling, friend, colleague or boss following and cultivating these foundational values? Wouldn’t you feel comfortable with their (and the collective) future?
Some may say that in the 21st century the Scout Law is old fashioned or quaint. I would recommend you consider the alternative. How would you feel about your child, spouse, sibling, friend, colleague or boss not following and cultivating these foundational values?
When our President, leaders, bosses, managers and even team members fail to live by these foundational values of exceedingly high character, it’s up to us to double down and use each day as potential to build and cultivate the foundational (Boy Scout) values of great leaders who live lives of greatness.
Fortunately the numbers are in our favor because there were about 40,000 work in progress Boy Scouts at the 2017 Jamboree who recognized the call to action. They know leadership is not about rhetoric or the office you hold; it’s about how you lead your life.
It’s easier to build strong leaders than it is to repair broken companies.
