Do What You Say You’re Going To Do

Do What You Say You're Going To Do

One of the most powerful ways to build credibility at work as a manager, at home as a parent/manager—with any relationship, is to do what you say you’re going to do.

It’s one of the easiest things to say—I do what I say I will do, but it’s uncommon to see people actually execute on this promise. When the time comes to fulfill the promise, it has become less important and less critical, at least in our perception.

This experience is universal. I’ll send you those seeds for the growing season, I’ll call you when I’m ready to change things up, I’ll start exercising regularly after the holiday, and the worldwide classic….. I’ll return this book to you when I finish reading it.

We don’t intentionally not do what we say, but time erodes our resolve to keep the promise. We rationalize it–I’ll get to it. I’m busy. And ultimately we accept the little “fault line” in our behavior as just one of those things.

In Business

What starts out as the little crack of not doing what you say you will do turns into a huge fissure in the business world.

Have you ever waited for a delivery that didn’t show? I waited all day for a quote from a fence contractor who never showed. The home power washing contractor never called me back.

If you can’t get a delivery, quote or a call back what’s going to happen when you buy the product or when you really need service?

The trouble is this gap in integrity has become accepted even normal….to some.

Stand Out

It’s not that hard to distinguish yourself in today’s world. If you treat everything like it is a legal binding contract…because it is, you will stand out. Even when you borrow someone’s book. Return it when you said you would. Do what you say you’re going to do, not when you feel like it, not when it behooves you, always! You will stand out.

Follow through, execute and deliver consistently. Can you visualize the credibility and trust you will build with this forthright approach?

Three Tips

  • Don’t ever let anyone down, particularly yourself.
  • Why wouldn’t everyone want to seize control over what they have control over?
  • What it comes down to is what you do is much more important than what you say. Remember our friend Emerson’s adage, what you are speaks so loudly I can’t hear what you say.

Don’t just say what you’re going to do. Do it. Make your life a living dialog of your integrity. Do what you say you’re going to do and see what happens in your life.
