Don’t Read These Books
Books for Change are a great resource for your efforts whether it’s about personal Change or organizational Change. But actually, the Change in an organization must begin with the one, the individual. Personal Change is the precursor to organizational culture Change.
Personal Change, if successfully executed and sustained will influence organizational change. It all comes down to the power of one to Change and then to effect Change. Inner work shows up in outer work.
So let me save you some time and effort. Don’t read these books: 7 Habits-Highly-Effective-People, How-Win-Friends-Influence-People, Mastery-Keys-Success-Long-Term-Fulfillment, Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff and 21-Irrefutable-Laws of Leadership-Follow them and others will follow you. Books for Change!
If you grasp the fact that your internal personal Change will effect external Change you have the secret sauce. The rest, which is found in these books are the mere details. If you really understand this to the point you own this mindset you are known as a “Trim Tab.”
Poet, philosopher, inventor and leader extraordinaire, Buckminster Fuller applied the Trim Tab as a metaphor toward one person creating Change in the world.
“Something hit me very hard once, thinking about what one little man could do. Think of the Queen Mary the whole ship goes by and then comes the rudder. And there’s a tiny thing at the edge of the rudder called a trim tab. It’s a miniature rudder. Just moving the little trim tab builds a low pressure that pulls the rudder around. Takes almost no effort at all. So I said that the little individual can be a trim tab. Society thinks it’s going right by you, that it’s left you altogether. But if you’re doing dynamic things mentally, the fact is that you can just put your foot out like that and the whole big ship of state is going to go. So I said, call me Trim Tab.” —Buckminster Fuller
As a Trim Tab—when someone brings a problem to the office, you will know the situation as an opportunity to embody the Trim Tab metaphor and through this “modeling” effect organizational Change. The Books for Change will guide you.
