Brian Braudis’ 1-Minute Morning Memo: January 7, 2019 – Well Being

well being is importantWhen I met the father of positive psychology, Dr. Martin Seligman, he said well being is important!

Well being should be a top personal goal. It should be a corporate goal and a national goal. It’s that important!

As I reflected on this later, I saw how common it is to want success and pursue riches; to seek notoriety, “likes” and followers, etcetera……It’s important to post online but is it as important for you to cultivate well being?

I encourage you to make well being a top personal goal now, early in the new year. But know that one single practice is not the answer.

Follow Seligman’s PERMA model of well being for easy remembering that well-being is shaped by the habitual mindsets and behaviors that uplift us.

The PERMA Model is — Positive emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment. Include exercise for physical health and you can sustain your well being over the long term by balancing your focus across these different areas depending on what’s happening in your life at the moment.

A sticking point for execution is people often become overwhelmed thinking they have to do everything with 100% effort all the time. That thinking can disrupt your well being effort before it starts.

Recognize that there is more here than meets the eye. Such as areas that influence and bleed over into other areas.

For example

Do you think that cultivating positive emotions would increase your engagement and help with relationships?

If you worked to bring more meaning into your life, finding your purpose and living it vigorously would that help you feel more accomplishment?
If you are more engaged and are feeling better about your relationships, purpose and accomplishment, would that make you want to exercise even a little?

No one is expected to be Superman just bring a little invention, a little MacGyver into your efforts.

The key is to discover what you like, what works for you and do that consistently. Even if you don’t do it totally “right” or by the book, just doing it is right enough.

Take it from me

I created all of my own programs–for fitness and well being….According to all the health and fitness journals, I’ve been exercising badly for years…… but I’m effective and my overall well being isn’t too bad either.

Don’t let the worry of doing things right keep you from the well being that is waiting for you in 2019.

Happy New Year!
