It’s a New Day. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the recent election that has sparked divides beyond imagination.
My wife and I both have large families. I have four sisters and four brothers. My wife has four brothers and one sister. The “other side” is always present, energetic, engaged and vocal.
We didn’t always have good relationships with all of our siblings and associated friends…But now we do, even during the election!
After several battles, sore feelings and ruined holiday gatherings, I decided to shift. I wanted to live stress-free, without acrimony and biting conversations. I wanted my children to have a different experience.
With specific intention, I created a new day. I shifted and changed. An important fact is my family didn’t change. They responded to my change.
I use my 10 Minute Leadership Habit tool to read, reflect and focus for (at minimum) 10 minutes everyday for the express purpose of building strength and well-being to smoothly sail through life even with family: I
- Cultivate patience.
- Work on self-discipline.
- Hold judgment.
- Reframe to not see others as “the enemy.”
Turns out, I’m on the right track. According to social psychologist Jonathan Haidt’s TED Talk titled Can A Divided America Heal?
Haidt asks: do you want to be as angry, uncomfortable and worried as you’ve been the last year? He said this election gives us a new opportunity for a critical shift.
