Brian Braudis’ 1-Minute Morning Memo: April 9, 2018 – Rise Above Cynicism

Rise Above CynicismYou undoubtedly have experienced cynicism. Everybody knows someone who believes they have no effect and things will never change. Sometimes we even see it in ourselves. You also know we need to Rise Above Cynicism.

No one is born a cynic. This is a learned and conditioned behavior.

The Boiling Frog*

You probably have heard of the boiling frog. If you drop a frog into boiling water it will instinctively jump out. But if you place a frog in a pot of cool water and gradually increase the temperature the frog won’t notice the water is getting hotter. It will sit there until the water boils and boil with it.

The fate of our frog is not unlike some people. They adjust to the everyday conflicts, the disappointments, and the frustrations that take the wind out of our sails. They don’t notice they are becoming conditioned in the wrong direction. They begin to think anxiety is acceptable and cynicism is a valid perspective. They begin boiling and no longer believe they need to Rise Above Cynicism.

This conditioning is what makes life feel dull. The adjustment and settling for what we can get rather than what we want deadens our experience. In infinitesimal ways we give up a tiny bit everyday without noticing. We are being conditioned in the wrong direction and we adjust to it. This leads to the ultimate dead end—cynicism.

Here are 6 strategies to Rise Above Cynicism:

Know your foe. Researchers and psychologists point to cynicism as a sign of surrender, you’ve given up. Cynics will try to pull you to their side, making you believe they are rebels but in reality they have ceded power to passivity and inaction. They believe the power to create change is not in them it’s with someone else. Cynicism is a form of coping while avoiding taking responsibility for inaction and lack of success. It’s a defense used to hide self-doubt. Cynics aren’t rebels they are waving the white flag of surrender.

Be a real rebel. Real rebels seize the territory of their own thoughts, no matter what others say they actively invest in the effort, take action to direct their own life and beat the odds. Real rebels don’t rely on words. Real rebels push toward achievement with grit, crust and perseverance.

Never ever give up. Fight to avoid being pulled down by communal cynics. Remember they spread their version of the world that’s not your version of the world.

Be the leader of you. People will tell you that the system is rigged against you. This thinking is for followers. Don’t allow the Internet, the news, others to think and decide for you. Instead write your own script. What do you see? How can you use what exists right now to begin creating your life rather than reacting to life?

Get a grip. The Reality is cynicism points to a scarcity mentality. It is an easy escape for those who have no answers, no new thinking and no new initiatives. Cynics are saying I can’t make a difference so I’ll just complain, whine and point fingers.

Notice what goes unnoticed and come off autopilot. When you feel better you perform better. Move away from cynics. Sense and intercept a bad vibe or a bad mood.

*No frogs were injured in this work. The frog is only an analogy. It’s a parable.

A cynic is a man who knows the price of everything, and the value of nothing.
Oscar Wilde
