Honoring heroes on Memorial Day was initially known as Decoration Day. The man closest to this solemn holiday, Abraham Lincoln initiated the effort to honor those who delivered freedom. Lincoln had a vision, but the American Patriots brought us freedom, and he wanted to recognize their selfless sacrifice.
As we are honoring heroes by laying wreaths, flags and attend parades and cookouts, remember, one of the best ways to honor those who made sacrifices, including the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom we enjoy is to live in gratitude and honor.
There is no higher expression of honor than through Self.
- Rather than getting angry at a distracted driver, show patience, understanding, and courtesy.
- If a crying baby is disrupting you otherwise quiet dinner, accept it as it is.
- If you have to wait in line or traffic, do so with graciousness.
- When someone is rude to you smile or ignore the disrespectful behavior.
With your contribution, we will continue to make this great “land of the free” a shining example of what is possible.
“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.” —John Fitzgerald Kennedy
