Brian Braudis’ 1-Minute Morning Memo: May 28, 2018 – Memorial Day 2018

The unofficial start of summer is here. The barbecues and mattress sales are great fun but secondary to the real symbolism of Memorial Day. I urge you to be in touch with the better angels of our nature.

Freedom, remembrance and Red, White and Blue are inextricably harnessed to this last Monday in May. Everywhere you look this weekend the memorial colors will be reminding us of our freedom.

Be reminded also that these times we are in are not new. The way Lincoln famously closed his First Inaugural Address in 1861 could easily fit in and apply today.

We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield, and patriot grave, to every living heart and hearthstone, all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.

Let yourself also be reminded on this Memorial Day of the charge to honor America and prevail only through our better angels. Go beyond what comes easy. Resist the social norms and allow yourself to be touched and influenced by the better angels of our nature.
