Brian Braudis’ 1-Minute Morning Memo: July 31, 2017 – Leadership

Work in Progress Leaders.

The Boy Scouts are work in progress leaders. You may have heard the President’s speech to the Boy Scouts and then the apology for the speech. People are blaming the Boy Scouts. Certainly, there’s a lot of blame to spread around but only one source of friction.

I have been heavily involved with the Boy Scouts for many years and these things come and go but by and large Boy Scouts are still living the Boy Scout Law. See the Scout Law and my full blog article here.

Looking at it through the lens of leadership, what is supremely important is what the speech says about our President, not what we say about our President’s speech. It’s the same as when your manager criticizes or denigrates a team member. The remarks say more about your manager than they say about your team member.

Invited With the Best Intentions to Guide our Work in Progress Leaders

When our President, leaders, bosses and managers fail to live by the foundational values of exceedingly high character, it’s up to us to double down and use each day as potential to build and cultivate the foundational values of great leaders who live great lives.

Fortunately the numbers are in our favor because there were about 40,000 work in progress leaders that recognize the call to action. They know leadership is not about the office you hold; it’s about how you live your life.
