Every year we celebrate our Independence it seems to take on more meaning and increased significance. The challenges to our way of life and the freedom we enjoy are omnipresent.
I read about another dark time during the Civil War in Doris Kerns Goodwin’s book, Team of Rivals. Abraham Lincoln felt a personal responsibility to keep the Union intact. Knowing that his actions would have world-changing consequences…..Lincoln:
- Refused to surrender to the gloom that permeated newspapers and public conversation.
- Used his fierce resolve to lift himself and the Union.
- Adhered to his fixed purpose of unity and freedom.
- Made all thoughts and effort for the Union, placed himself second.
Benefits of Independence
Lincoln maintained a positive (winning) mindset and there was never any doubt—he possessed the prudence, wisdom and magnanimity to carry the Union intact, triumphantly over the threat of revolution.
May our children and our children’s children to a thousand generations continue to enjoy the benefits conferred upon us by a united country. Abraham Lincoln
Freedom and independence like anything worth having is not bestowed nor is it free. It is achieved.
Let us continue to accept nothing less than stupendous achievement.
