Today’s focus, July 4th, 2015. This Independence Day Holiday was unconventional for me. My wife went visiting with our children while I stayed home with our sick dog. I made it productive and enjoyable by reading Pour Your Heart Into It: How Starbucks Built a Company One Cup At a Time in two days.
Here are three takeaways for you.
- As an entrepreneur Howard Schultz began to realize an opportunity to create more than a business. He could also create economic and social value
- He understood great companies need a visionary leader, a skilled executive and professional management. The entrepreneur at heart would have to have a change of heart
- Schultz recognized the need to develop a personal foundation strong enough to endure the pressures, anxiety and challenges of growing a business to the next level
Howard Schultz was growing a company, fulfilling his higher purpose and ambition–to create commerce, economic and social value. He was also developing himself all at the same time. Schultz realized that he needed structure for a bureaucracy but wanted to remain nimble, able to be different and entrepreneurial. How American!
God Bless America!
