Stress at Work
Stress at work has caused intensive research but researchers can’t agree on one definition of stress. They generally describe stress as a state of mental, emotional and /or physical strain or tension resulting from demanding circumstances, discontentment or adverse conditions.
The concept and experience of stress
Anyone who has ever worked, was part of a family, attended a family gathering or basically lived a life knows what stress is and what if feels like. We can all relate to the concept of stress…
But the experience of stress is different for everybody. What is stressful to you may not be to your partner, friend or neighbor. Everyone’s experience with stress is different. Some enjoy being frightened by a movie or thrilled by jumping out of an airplane, to others these events may stir up the stress of a lifetime.
My daughter loves rollercoasters, backwards, straight downhill, upside down at 100 miles an hour! She can’t wait to get on one; I can’t wait to get off of them. Rollercoasters stress me out……….
Stress is like beauty and art…. hard to describe but you know it when you feel it…It’s part of being human…
I think we can all agree that work causes too much stress from far too many angles and on too many levels.
Primary source of stress at work
A primary cause of the stress of work was highlighted in an April 1 article titled Why so Many Americans Hate Their Jobs where Gallup released their latest survey results. The grim news is 66% of 100 million employees are disengaged or actively disengaged at work.
Through their research Gallup identified the primary reason for disengagement. Respondents continue to be disengaged because many of their supervisors are ill equipped to manage people and all their idiosyncrasies. This situation adds to the already palpable stress of work. Whether you are a team member or a supervisor, you have a stake in this situation. Team members experience elevated stress as a result of ill prepared supervisors. And supervisors deal with elevated stress within and without.
Stress at work and people as a source of stress for supervisors is not new. The question is what can we do about it? What is the antidote?
We must begin in earnest to equip and empower our supervisors. However, there’s more here than meets the eye. Everything is at stake, in addition to being challenged by the idiosyncrasies of people; ill equipped supervisors are in a position to make bad choices and bad decisions. Team members see theses poor decisions and “management” becomes a target of ridicule. All around effectiveness is lost.
We should all be prepared. Everyone should be in condition to cultivate well being for our teams, our workplace, our communities and ourselves. Prepare yourself with my Stress-Free Manager Audio Program.
